I work a retail car sales job in the mall. Our store is extremely understaffed. We just had 4 out of 8 people working here quit within the last 3 months.
Yesterday, the manager schedules for everyone except me and a coworker to be off at 6:00 PM. We had 2 test drive appointments at 5:45 PM, meaning that there would be no one at the store while we are away doing test drives.
Instead of the manager staying extra and watching over the store, she leave at exactly 6:00 PM on the dot and makes my other coworker who recently gave birth to a kid; stay and wait until we both finished and came back from our demos. We came back at 7:00 PM.
When I asked my coworker who was supposed to be gone at 6:00 why was she still here; she told me that the manager said “since no one else can stay later, you have to stay here and wait until they both get back from their test drives.”
Hilariously enough, at the beginning of the week our manager was complaining that no one here is a “team player”.
Anyone in a leadership position should lead by example. If the example a leader sets is to fend for yourself, people will do that.
