Manager hasn’t filled the role I’m covering for – what are my options?

About 6 weeks ago, a person on my team in a position higher than mine was fired for poor performance. I, being the top performer on my team (of course because the reward for hard work is more work) was asked to temporarily cover the role until it was filled. I spoke to a friend who suggested I ask for acting pay for the 6 weeks I’ve been covering, but that seems pretty bold. Maybe time off in lieu? Suggestions appreciated.
