I am a manager. I know our P & L. We contract manufacture in NE USA.
Union shops pay way higher.
We are owned by a Corp with many plants.
A few plants are Union. Most are not.
We do not have the sales to support a union.
We are barely staying afloat now.
Corp would shut us down if my employees unionized.
We would need to increase sales by 40 percent support wages comparable to local union shops.
Sales are centralized, controlled by corporate and sent to the plant that corporate decides gets the sales. We rarely see new business. It would take 4 to 5 years to increase sales by 40 percent, assuming we lose no business.
I am in a very high capital expense industry. (We need to buy expensive machines often)
Idk what the take is. Let the business fail and look for new work? I'd rather try to fix this place, I have nice hours, pay, vacation, Healthcare. The hourly people do not get payed great and are often poached.
Somehow we have very low turnover with a 10+year tenure.
Aging workforce. Lots of boomers who just want to grind out overtime. 10% of my staff is over 68…
Culture here is great. Its a happy place with great people.
I dont really have the power to do anything.. but I think if I can get the sales up, I could sow the seeds to make the right things happen.
