Manager sharing personal information with customers

I've recently started a new job, first month. In my previous shift, a customer I have never met or served was telling me my surname, spelling it out. Bear in mind I've only been here a month, and I have never met this group of people, they know my surname and are making jokes about it. Also, one of the people who got told just was released from prison that same day. I never confirmed or denied their questions about the name, only said I don't understand, or ignored it. At the end of my shift, the customer apologised for making me upset and I just asked how he found that name out, he said “there's only one person” (my manager and all management know my surname due to documentation.

Other employees don't)

With one of my managers knowing my surname, and being friends with him and another, it can only rule out that it is my manager who released my last name without my consent.

Is this a legal thing to do? I've not received my work contract yet to see if there is a section in that paperwork about circumstances like these. I'm just worried if my home town is going to be “accidentally” released in their next casual conversation.

I am planning to hand my notice in when I get my next week rota. Is there anything else that I can do?

(UK).

Thanks in advance.
