Managers are obsolete roles

I wanted to ask if anyone else has had this experience. I’ve worked corporate jobs for the last four years and in each office, the manager(s) are powerless to fix any and all problems in the office. They don’t have the freedom to hire new people when they want, they cannot hire anyone to fix any problems with our computers, they don’t have the knowledge or ability to train someone to do the job, all they do is manage patient/consumer complaints.

Hell, each time I started a new position, I got the impression they had never hired anyone before because my manager and super had no answers for me about anything. If they don’t know the answer to a question they gave me corporate speech and said it in a roundabout way.

Are managers just placeholder roles to manage expectations now? None of the bosses I’ve had have truly ever had any power in the workplace or authority to resolve issues. They just make our schedules and handle customer complaints and deal out disciplinary action.

Why do we need managerial roles if they cannot accomplish anything of note in the workplace?
