I work in a funeral home, this is my second job within the industry and I've only been in it just over a year. My role is what's known as a funeral director's assistant (FDA) which involves stuff like assisting on funerals and picking up the bodies from hospitals/homes. I switched companies because I found the job too stressful, high standards, low pay, and straight up disregard for staff safety and wellbeing. I had a flexi-schedule so I could never make any plans ahead of time, and this is made even worse by the fact that the job hours suck as it is (long hours, unpaid breaks that are not guaranteed and often don't get, work holidays if they land on your svheduled rotation).
The new company has better policy around a lot of these things but the execution is not great. I still spend way more time at work than at home, some days are 14 hr shifts in an effort to give more days off but honestly it's bs. You are way more likely to get your hour long breaks off but that doesn't make up for the fact that they don't pay you for them and lengthen your day by an hour (9 hr shifts but only paid for 8). There's still so much wrong with this place and from my understanding that's just the case in the funeral industry and I feel like an idiot for trying to stay in funerals instead of just leaving all together but I just didn't want to work for minimum wage again with how expensive things have gotten.
The reason I'm writing this is because those with my job title don't make a living wage. I've been in passive job hunting mode for a while because of it. Recently I finished my probation and was td I'd automatically be added to the pallbearer list at that point. It's a list of staff who are contacted to be a pallbearer for families that don't have enough people who are able to carry the casket. The job pays about 50 and hour, it's a quick and easy thing you can do on your days off. I was hoping to supplement my income like this.
Myself and another FDA have asked to be put on the list multiple times, neither one of us has gotten a single email about it. The probation rule is supposed to be to ensure that people show up but I know they let a funeral director do it before their probation was up. So far it looks like only FDs are being put on it which pisses me off because they make much more money than us. I'm frustrated with A LOT at work and I'm at a point where I might just ask a manager to justify this to me and quit on the spot if I don't like the answer. Does anybody have any advice on how to handle this?
