Does your state have mandatory lunch breaks? Only 17 states in the US require employers to give meal breaks to employees. Majority of those laws require a certain amount of hours worked. 12 states have absolutely zero regulation on meal breaks, including for minors. The states that do have laws often have exemption clauses for certain jobs.
This came up when talking with others in my medical professional about having breaks. Nurses in other countries are given multiple meal breaks and often have a total break time of over an hour for a 12 hour shift. In the US it is sadly very common for nurses to work 12 hours with zero lunch break. The US healthcare work culture is so fucked up half the nurses were questioning how breaks were even possible while other nurses were wondering how night shift nurses function without their 2 hour nap time and you could definitely tell where someone was from by their opinion on breaks. I feel lucky and that I'm at a good hospital because I'm allowed to have a 30 minute lunch break during my 12 hour shift, but in reality that is the bare minimum for a lot of other places. Absolutely bonkers.
Find out if your state has mandatory meal breaks. Everyone deserves to have meal breaks.
