Many people will assume I’m talking about taxes (they do that too) but I’m talking specifically about overtime and wage theft.
I worked for a LARGE church, 15k plus pre-pandemic, and I can’t think of ONE example of a FT employee (of which there are hundreds) being compensated for the regular 60+ hour weeks.
Depending on the season, we would be expected to sell out to a disruptive schedule, and our thanks would often come in the form of a 50 dollar bill for each staff member and an atta-boy from the senior team.
I was pastoral staff, so I speak mainly from my experience and my peers in that sphere, but I was discouraged directly from discussing wages under threat of discipline as well.
This anti work movement needs an arm in the church world, it’s painful to watch people I still care for be taken advantage of under the guise of good stewardship while senior pastors buy their third homes.
