Back in 2018, there was a petition for a pair of ballot initiatives to increase MI's minimum wage gradually to $12.05 by 2022 (would have been ~$13 for 2023) and to guarantee sick pay for employees. It looked as though they would easily pass.
So, GOP state legislators quickly adopted the bills before the election in order to keep them off the ballot. Then, after the election, they just as quickly amended them to $12.05 by 2030 and eliminated the sick pay. (They can do that on legislated bills, but not ballot initiated bills.) The ballot initiatives would have also paid food and drink servers regular minimum wage (instead of 35% of minimum wage) starting in 2024.
A district court judge found the GOP's tactics to be unconstitutional. Now, an appeals court judge has reversed that decision and blocked the increase to $13 that was to go into effect next month.
This will surely be appealed to the MI supreme court. We have both a Dem majority state legislation, Dem Governor, Dem AG, and a Dem majority state SC for the first time in about 40 years. We'll see if they all walk the talk, or if they're full of BS.
But part of me is just disgusted that, in 2023, we're still fighting for $13/hr and a few sick days.
