Mini rant: if my SO get sick, his job makes him use up his earned PTO before tapping into sick leave

Not sure if there’s any laws against it, but it’s so frustrating for him to carefully save up his PTO for the whole year and then randomly get hit with sickness and have to use it all up. And of course, they are immediately suspicious if you happen to get sick and are very hesitant to even “let” you call out because they automatically assume people are just trying to get time off. Also, you guessed it, you can’t use sick leave if you aren’t sick and have to “prove it” or you get a write up for it. Take time off and don’t have any PTO? Write up. It’s so shitty and pisses me off and I hate how employer protective this country is.
