Mom Diagnosed With Cancer. Work: “We still want you to work 47 hours”

I feel like this should be illegal, but man, like. I can't find anything that suggests it is. Mom was diagnosed with cancer recently, it's not great but it's not like, super life-threatening. We almost kind of wish it was. (We don't, by the way. She got lucky.) She has doctor's appointments, she has scans she has to do when time opens for her to be able to do them on short notice. The type of cancer she has is 'aggressive' so the docs are doing everything they can as quickly as possible. Her work originally told her she could take a leave of absence. Mom was diagnosed with cancer recently, it's not great but it's not like, super life-threatening. We almost kind of wish it was. (We don't, by the way. She got lucky.)

She has doctor's appointments, she has scans she has to do when time opens for her to be able to do them on short notice. The type of cancer she has is 'aggressive' so the docs are doing everything they can as quickly as possible.

Her work originally told her she could take a leave of absence. But because the treatment plan is suggesting it'd take like 18 months to complete, they suddenly were like “Whoa we can only support a leave of absence for 6 months”. Then they told her that she could work 20 hours a week and kinda take it easy(she's a manager) and keep her current pay and benefits.

Then the doctors told her that it's not currently life-threatening, and suddenly she's expected to keep working 47 hours “until it gets worse” and they're not allowing her to schedule more people to help her inside the store to do the work that she can no longer do. She's told to 'take it easy' but not given more time on the schedule to put more people to do the work she can't. They're expecting her to 'take it easy' with the same number of(short-staffed) people they've had all along.

In her own words “how am I supposed to tell the one employee they let me have that they have to do everything while I sit in the office”. She can't not do what they say because we require their health insurance to pay for the medical bills that we can't afford. They told her that if she did take a leave of absence for longer than 6 months they'd cut their contributions to her health insurance.

It's fucked up, man.
