My 1st job was absolutely shocking.

So I live in the UK and worked for a Farmhouse Inns pub as a carvery chef. I was promised £10.50 an hour but was at first going to be paid £6.85 ish an hour for my training. I thought that was fair enough so I start my job and everything seems fine. Then I realised 2 months in I was still being paid those pitiful wages, I ask my boss on WhatsApp and she ignores me. Then one night they decide “oh lets put an under 18 and new person on the Potwash on the busiest day at night” (despite having 3 or 4 adult potwashes) So that means after 9-10 he had to legally leave the worksite and they would always want me working on the potwash which is fine… UNTIL I realise because he’s new he didn’t get through too much so I had a shit ton…

Then one night they decide “oh lets put an under 18 and new person on the Potwash on the busiest day at night” (despite having 3 or 4 adult potwashes)

So that means after 9-10 he had to legally leave the worksite and they would always want me working on the potwash which is fine… UNTIL I realise because he’s new he didn’t get through too much so I had a shit ton of washing to do and after that you have to scrub the floor in the potwash area, and clean the machines, and take all the equipment back in their place.

The usual time it would take to finish it all would be at 12 in the morning (although one fucking night we were up until 1:30AM because there was only fucking two of us on the potwash while everyone else fucked off and the assistant manager in charge of the closure was at the front sitting on his ass)

So on my final day before I quit we were about to finish cleaning the kitchen and then we realised that this chef who’s meant to do the breakfast prep for tomorrow didn’t do it despite saying he did. So three chefs had to do that, I told the person in charge of the closure what else needs doing, she says just general cleaning I look around and the kitchen is SPOTLESS and cleaner than it usually is.

So I said fuck it and just got a taxi back home. Then while I was in the car park two co workers confronted me. One was the chef who didn’t do the breakfast prep telling me to come with him, so you’re telling me you can’t be asked to do the breakfast prep but you can be asked to go outside and tell me to stay in the kitchen doing nothing? And then a 2nd co worker arrives when my taxi arrives and says “you’re not finished! We’re working as a team!”

First of all mate I did, I spent all night helping potwash and cleaning the floor and helping in any way I can, I did my fucking part while earning those pitiful wages.

After that I said fuck it and quit.

Before I quit I looked at my contract and it just said I was earning £6.85 and nothing about the promised £10.50 an hour. So they took advantage of me knowing this is my 1st job and having me being the clean up bitch every weekend finishing at stupid o clock.

Make sure to always read your contracts before taking a job people!

TLDR:My employer took advantage of me paying me shit wages and having me potwashing despite me being a carvery chef and doing that until super late stupid o clock
