My boss told me to never feel bad about calling in sick

A few months ago I was out sick from work for 3 days because I had pneumonia (not Covid). The day I came back I was still not feeling great but I figured I could survive the day. I work in a hospital lab so it’s important that someone fills in for me. I probably would’ve taken the whole week as sick days if I was in an office job where it’s not critical for someone to be there. The day I came back I brought donuts because I felt bad for putting them on the spot to find someone to fill in for me. My boss usually goes on break around when I come in and saw the donuts and asked if I brought them in. I said yes and explained why. He said thanks for bringing in donuts but you never need to feel bad for taking days…

He said thanks for bringing in donuts but you never need to feel bad for taking days off when you need them. I liked this boss before, but this just solidified that. You really should NEVER feel bad for taking care of yourself and preventing other people from catching your illness. It’s such an ingrained thing that taking sick days is bad and you should feel ashamed if you do. I really appreciate my boss for saying that. We need to get rid of the stigma of taking days off when you’re sick. It’s in everyone’s best interest. You’ll heal faster and you won’t get everyone else at work sick. It’s a win win and should be treated that way.
