So, I work in a “fast food” but not fast food sandwich chain. Our shop was recently taken over by a new owner. We're losing a lot of business because the way she is doing things is now too strict and we're receiving a lot of complaints. We've been understaffed for a while, but now all of our staff are leaving because of the way she is treating us and the business. I was offered a new position in a new store opening up so I put in my notice and the manager, who is also moving with us, told me to just say I have covid if I need to go to the new store early to set up.
However, the manager recently got covid and they were told that they had to come in and work, despite having it. Now, the laws here have changed and you are allowed to work while covid-positive, but 80% of our customers are elderly people, kids, people with kids and nurses. So our boss is not just fine with, but is TELLING us we NEED to come in, even if we have covid. This will lead to us infecting our elderly customers, who could then potentially die, same with the kids that we could indirectly affect. And the nurses? If they were to contract it, they could pass it onto their patients who could then die because they're clearly already likely not well if they're in Hospital or in the doctors. Even knowing all of this, our boss has said that we must come in if we test positive. That's not to mention that if you contract covid, you would likely not be able to even get out of bed.
Now onto the food poisoning part. I told her I threw up on shift after I had closed the store. This morning she blew up my phone calling me and texting me. She was asking if I felt any better and that she couldn't get anyone else in so I HAD to come in. It is against the law here to work for at least 48hrs after you have thrown up, especially due to food poisoning. Not to mention, again, the potential of transmitting that bacteria and disease onto people. Onto the elderly, or the kids, or the nurses. There was no concern for anything but her business that she doesn't even want to work for. The business she expects to be able to just bring her in a lot of money while she sits back and does fuck all about. The business that is run by her staff who she doesn't try to keep happy. The staff who she doesn't care whether they stay or leave, except when it means she has to come in and work herself when she doesn't want to.
I hate work. I hate working for this inconsiderate boss. I hate being told I need to come in and infect customers just because she doesn't want to shut the shop down early for one night.
