My company asking for “volunteers” to do unpaid work for them.

I work as a virtual teacher for a third party company that contracts you with a school for a certain amount of hours for a certain rate of pay. However, they sent this email out making it look personalized (but everyone got one) asking you if you would be willing to create a 30 minute presentation on six different areas. ….without pay. Of course, I said no. This is an endeavor that would require 1-2 hours of research and creation. Not to mention the times you’d have to spend presenting it to however many groups. Is this even legal? My husband says it isn’t illegal because it is a voluntary request. But can a company you work for based on a contract legally even ask you to “volunteer” your time to do work activities?
