my coworker doesn’t get “work smarter not harder”

Our work is very customer oriented. A customer has a problem, they come to us & we go and address the problem, easy. He wants to go to the customer regardless of whether they have a problem or not. Almost as if customer problems are inherent and the default. Not the case, but this is his posturing. The same guy sends work related emails at 9pm. If I'm not in the office I'm not at work so don't expect me to read and respond to emails when I'm not in the office. Oh and rumor has it he'll gladly watch the boss' kid when she goes off to the hospital to deliver her 2nd kid. Yes bosses can be friendly, but that seems like messing with one's work-life balance. Or maybe that's just working harder not smarter.
