TLDR: My boss is paying my coworker for the job I’m training for, that my coworker doesn’t even do. My boss is offering manager position that she doesn’t intend on actually giving. Instead she’s lightening her own load.
Apologies for any spelling errors also. Phone lagging real bad right now.
I’m not too sure where to start here, but I started working at this job last October. I work at a grocery store as a assistant front end manager. When I was hired I was told vaguely about the managers who came before me, mostly stating the had problems with the schedules and quarrels with my boss but never really knew why until yesterday. A month or so ago I was offered the position of Front End Manager, the position right above mine. I had been waiting in line for the opportunity as two managers before me couldn’t make the cut because they weren’t able to get the numbers right. I deal with money. I count tills, run a service desk, close and manage the sales floor. We have a lot of trouble with scheduling around here. They cut hours almost constantly and are very uptight about not getting overtime, yet they schedule us in a way that does not function. Often we are missing a closing cashier, or no cashiers for hours at a time when i also have other things I need to be doing at that time. I don’t understand how we can’t afford to schedule the employees in a way that functions. At base level I feel like that should be something they can do. Aside from that I’m paid pretty little. Cashiers only get up to $8 an hour and I get $14.55 as an assistant front end manager. I’ve been training to be the front end manager but here’s where the real trouble starts. I watched my boss open about 3 times before they dumped me off to open all by myself. I wasn’t sure at the time that I was ready as my boss was very very vague and fast with the training but I ended up succeeding. I can accurately do the job and open. I have been for several weeks now. After my first day of opening I talked to my boss on the phone and she said that it would be a long time before they trained me for “everything else” which I don’t even know the contents of because I already do the job to the fullest extent I know of other than small things like using the fax machine and called for service when a machine is down. All was well because I can be patient. I’ve been very successful at my job so far and do well, I’m responsible, reliable and to be honest get worked to the bone constantly. Things have started to seem shady and bleak about me actually getting the title for this position. I found out yesterday that my coworker who has expressed she has no intention of taking the position because she has to be with her kids in the morning, is getting paid for the position I’m training for. My coworker does not open, she doesn’t even know how to. She’s just best buds with my boss. My boss said she wasn’t even the front end manager anymore technically which concerned me a bit when I heard her say that because I wondered who was getting paid for it. I learned that the same thing is why the previous manager training for the position left. She also was successful and could do the job. My boss supposedly told other employees that the previous manager wasn’t actually getting the position and when the previous found out and confronted them she just quit. I feel like I’ve been played this whole time because I do all of the tough work in our assistant manager team. I cover all the days off everyone else has including my boss who has three days a week off and I’m struggling to keep my two. A new applicant came in yesterday as well saying she’d talked to my boss about an open position (front end manager) that my boss is apparently hiring for. She’s playing people saying they’ll get the job but using them as free labor I guess. Not to mention doing her job for her Im not even getting paid to do. But my coworker does? Not to mention previous incidents where I’ve been forced long hours of overtime because of faulty schedules and then my boss told me she had to delete my hours of overtime so her or I don’t get in trouble. What do I do? Applying other places already.
