My Department’s Mandatory Overtime

I work at a control centre that operates 24/7 but there's only two solid shifts with partial teams (because there's not enough employees to fill up a shift) and one person doing extended operating hours (EOH). To the point that an employee's monthly overtime would meet the government's mandated maximum monthly OT (72 hours) because people are coming back on their days off to work overtime. This is how the shift works: AM – 5am to 3pm (OT from 1:50pm to 3pm) PM – 3pm to 2am (OT from 3pm to 5pm) EOH – 5pm to 5am (OT from 5pm to 9pm) There's supposed to be 13 people per shift but, on a good day, we only have 10. I've worked shifts before and there's always been 3 shifts (eg. 7am to 3pm, 3pm to 11pm, 11pm to 7am). Our theory is that the company is trying to cut cost…

This is how the shift works:

AM – 5am to 3pm (OT from 1:50pm to 3pm)

PM – 3pm to 2am (OT from 3pm to 5pm)

EOH – 5pm to 5am (OT from 5pm to 9pm)

There's supposed to be 13 people per shift but, on a good day, we only have 10.

I've worked shifts before and there's always been 3 shifts (eg. 7am to 3pm, 3pm to 11pm, 11pm to 7am).

Our theory is that the company is trying to cut cost by giving us mandatory overtime instead of giving salaries to additional employees to fill up the vacancies in the shifts and to add an additional shift. And our director is gaslighting us by saying that they're “looking into the issue” every time the subject is brought up and that “we're giving you the opportunity to do overtime”.
