I am an hourly employee who works overnight shifts. My job requires us to do monthly ‘coaching sessions’ where we call in and chat with a corporate trainer for 20 minutes. All of the coaching session time slots fall outside of my scheduled hours, meaning I am being asked to do them off the clock. Other employees are able to complete the session during their normal daytime hours.
I have done several of these sessions now and they have all been unpaid. At first I put up with it to be nice and I thought ‘its only 20 minutes, whatever’. But now I think its fucking annoying to call in for 20 minutes, so for the past two sessions I didn’t call in.
Well now they are expecting me to sign up for another session and I do not plan on completing it unpaid. Also, Im pretty sure in my current state (NH), the employer is required to pay a minimum of 2 hours anytime an employee is being asked to report to work. I do want to emphasize these coaching sessions are over the phone- so Im not sure if technically it would be considered reporting to work. Any input here?
Lastly I want backpay for the several sessions I completed unpaid. I cant help but wonder if theyll put up a fuss over any of this. What is the best way to go about this? Would you guys just start with a simple email and take it from there?
