My job as a ski instructor requires me to be on site, but will not pay me unless I am actively teaching a lesson

I live 4 hours and 250 miles round trip to the mountain (I know, not very profitable, that's okay. But losing money?). I am realizing that there are days where I show up but am not assigned to any lessons. On these days, I have to stay around for at least 3 hours completely unpaid. I can ski the mountain, but I get no pay or compensation for the gas or my time or anything. I just don't understand how I can be scheduled my months in advance, have to arrive on time to work, but might not make any money?? I'm… losing money doing this job.
