My job got threatened at an understaffed restaurant

Tl:dr my boss threatens my job at a restaurant after i prioritise other job opportunities Me and my partner are going for a home lone, so we need part or full time employment. I asked at the restaurant to be changed to part-time, but i got hit with “we do a review of employment type at 6 months and 12 months.” I was like fair enough, its a restaurant in a club so loads of corporate tape etc etc, time to find another job (and i did) as a kitchen hand in a cafe. My intent was to just work the 2 jobs alongside each other. Previously i worked 5 or 6 days at the restaurant. Me and my partner are going for a home lone, so we need part or full time employment. I work weekends at the cafe, and they gave me part time, theyre also paying slightly above minimum, unlike the restaurant. So i took weekends off my availability at the restaurant.

Last night i found out that the 6 and 12 month policy doesnt exist. I chatted to 4 other employees, all had gotten part or full time work when they asked. In addition to this i found out my boss (and not some corporate office worker who didnt know) was the one who denied/accepts part or fulltime requests. I was a bit offended that i was knocked back, i also know it isn’t performance based either. I always thought me and the boss got along pretty well.

The restaurant recently has gotten hospitalityitis, my word for when owners or bosses cut costs by understaffing. We felt it. The restaurant seats 1000 at one time. In the last two weeks weve gone from 6 lunch front of house staff to 4 (we need 2 permanently chained to the bar and the pos, so 2 waiters clearing, cleaning, resetting the whole place) and 10 dinner staff to 7. Before this the restaurant gave split shifts and would have us stay behind after our rostered finish times which in isolation i dont mind, but in addition to the understaffing, not cool.

Anyway The boss who denied my request came over to me last night and asked why i was no longer available weekends, and i told him. He said “oh its a waste of our time to train someone just for them to change their availability on us and you were hired under the proviso youd be working weekends.” He then threatened my job. Something along the lines of “i think we need to have a long think whether youre the right fit for our restaurant.”

My blood frothed man. In the same breath talk about wasting time training and then threaten my job there because i cant do weekends after denying my request to go part time?

So anyway im quitting the same time two of my colleagues go on extended holidays, in about a month which will give me ample time to find another job.
