I’ve been working at a small-ish ice cream shop as an opener for a little over a year now. I don’t want to say the exact name, but a big hint is that we make the ice cream with liquid nitrogen.
The entire store is run by teenage girls aged 16-19. But, we run this shop like the navy. Everyone knows their responsibilities, all prep work gets done on time, and customers are always satisfied. We have a 4.5 star rating.
Our old boss/the owner was amazing. She was batshit insane, but we loved her and she was incredibly kind to us. She recently sold the store which made everyone pretty upset and unsure about the future of our jobs. She assured us that the new owners will keep everything the same: hours, pay, etc.
That has not proven to be true. They’re making dozens of small changes that have been impacting our workday. For example, old boss’s husband used to come in and sanitize the cream canisters, and now the new owners want me to do it. That’s fine, but cleaning and sanitizing all those tiny parts takes me an hour and a half. I only have a 6 hour shift.
They want me to do it on Mondays. I don’t think that’s feasible, because Monday is the biggest prep work day. Not only that, I don’t want to be held liable in case someone gets sick or dies from incorrect sanitization procedures or something. Improbable, but I still worry.
I’ve talked with my coworkers, and at least 3 of them said they’re planning on quitting, and soon. I’m also planning on quitting. In total, we have 10 employees. 10. If 4-5 of their higher level employees (shift leads and managers) quit, they’re going to be fucked. So incredibly fucked.
They don’t know how to do anything in the store. They ask me 5 billion questions a day, usually the same question over and over. I take pictures of labels and send it to them so they know what brand of whatever to get, and 2 days later they’ll ask me for the same picture. I’m done.
My old boss has discussed with the new owners that if you make all these changes, the girls are going to leave. If you try and turn them into maids, they are going to leave. Is it even worth putting in my two weeks when I quit? Or should I just give up my key and never come back?
