Antiwork

My last day as maitre d’ at the most toxic work environment I’ve ever had the displeasure of being a part of was yesterday.

Obviously, the coworkers I like and I went out last night and I’m feeling it, so forgive any errors in spelling that may occur. I have been working at a restaurant owned by a big name restaurant group in Boston. It is easily the most poorly managed, chaotic shit show I’ve ever worked at, and I’ve stayed at messy places till the wheels fell off, so that’s saying something. They are openly misogynistic and have had me doing doubles everyday for the last few months, including events and holidays, when I needed an extra set of hands. I told them to hire more people, but they wouldn’t because, “In January [sister resaurant] is closing for renovations so you’ll have help then.” Okay, right, that absolutely did not help me and you guys keep telling me it’ll be fine. Great. On New years Ever we over booked by, and I’m not…

On New years Ever we over booked by, and I’m not kidding, 300 guests and I had a breakdown in the middle of service. Our somm had to take me to the liquor room so I could just sob for 45 minutes.

That following Monday I told my gm I needed to speak with him before he leaves that day. I sat down and told him my mental health is worth way more than working here. He responded, “I figured this is what this conversation might be. I noticed you’ve been overwhelmed and we were planning on asking you to step down…” wait, so I’m having a bad time because of you and you’re planning to demote me?! Absolutely not. Hard No.

I do not regret leaving this job. Sure, the money was good, but I’d rather be broke than work for this company.
