Hey guys, first time posting here. Last year I left my corporate job due to severe burnout after asking for 2 months off for mental health, unpaid, and being denied. Six years of my loyalty, and they won't give me 2 months to take care of myself. No problem, I got another job.
I got a part time job working at a very slow consignment shop nearby for 15 an hour. At first if was decent, the hours were what I needed and the pay was 15 an hour, but off the books, so slightly less than what I was doing on the books at corporate job but not bad. So eventually, I made the trade and left my corporate job.
Not long after that, my boss starts adding tasks for me to do throughout the day. He works his other business and handles clients, so he NEEDS someone at his shop. This person works the phone, register, cleans the place, takes care of deliveries, assembles new pieces, etc. Essentially a manager with keys who opens and sometimes closes the shop as well. (Did I mention how much he NEEDS this person?)
Anyway, business slowed down considerably these past 3 months. Many days I wouldn't see a single customer, and after opening and tidying up I'd have nothing to do. Well, he expects me to constantly be on my feet doing shit apparently, even when there's nothing to do.
I left my other job because he offered me comparable pay and similar hours, around 32 a week. Suddenly, he cuts our hours in half, to where I'm really doing like 18 hours max a week. 18 x 15 doesn't cut it, for anyone. And he's still on my ass once I've finished opening to be on my feet dusting, making sure displays look nice, cleaning the bathroom, etc.
Can I have more hours? “Sorry man business isn't good right now”
Can I get more hourly? “Wish I could but I can't do it, we're dying here man”
So, I began quietly shopping around for something better. In the meantime, I quietly quit. I'd get there, do my duties, and for the next 2 and a half hours, sit on my phone playing chess. Oh yeah, I forget to mention: these were 3 hour shifts, 6 days a week. Like what the fu k is that? And did I mention how IMPORTANT this is for him?
He has his other clients. These are rich clients. Interior design customers. He himself drives a 100k luxury crossover. The items we sell at his shop are expensive as fuck. This is a business by people with money, for people with money.
In order to help his clients, he needs someone watching his store. If that is such an important job to fill, and he and his clients are so rich, why the fuck am I making 15 an hour, there 6 days a week, for 3 hours a day?? Oh, and this motherfucker would take LIBERTIES with my time. He would run late with clients and call me last minute asking me to stay an extra hour. That's not where I want my hours to come from. They must be SCHEDULED.
Eventually I got an interview and had to take a training shift at my new job the same day I was scheduled to work for my delusional interior design asshole boss. When I informed him a week in advance of the conflict, he lost it and fired me on the spot.
“Good luck finding something this good”
He also docked 25 dollars of my 45 dollar pay for that day, for an item I damaged weeks ago accidentally (which happens to him too, its just the nature of the business). How fucking petty can you be?
My brother in christ I'm making over 25 an hour now. Commission based. I work harder, I get rewarded. My bosses tell me things like “good job” and “be good to us, we will be good to you”.
Some of these wealthy people live in fucking lala land. Fuck you colin eat shit
