Back from 2018-2019, I worked at a store that was just setting up in the area, just a small discount store. Those of us who were new hires were assigned the duty of building the shelving and stocking the items. Overall, a 2 month, full-time process that ended up with a store that, while somewhat random in inventory, looked decent and organized.
However, once the store got off the ground, hours were shortened, those of us who set up the actual store and did all the heavy lifting were relegated to simple floor work while the do-nothings got managerial positions, and the store often had hygiene issues (it was more based on the product coming in from dirty warehouses, but I digress). Those of us who worked the floor would either try and stock items that came in, or move displays that were set up maybe a few days earlier, every single day. The whole process of working there pounded in this idea of, “I just spent x hours working here, and I have achieved absolutely nothing.”
Anyway, I worked there for a year (and got cheated out of two weeks of pay, but that's a story for a different time) before I found a better job with a significant pay increase. Now, after three years, the store has closed down and is being replaced by a toy store, and I cannot exaggerate this enough: I feel absolutely nothing. I don't care about how much effort went into building the store, I don't care about the managers losing their jobs, I don't care about the lost inventory or profits, I just do not care about any of it. I remember I got the text telling me the store was closed, and I didn't even bat an eye. The Free Market in effect, everyone.
The toy store replacing it will at least bring joy to people. Anyway, just a rant about it to get it off my chest. Anyone else watch a former workplace capsize and feel mild apathy at best?
