So this happened in 2021 while I was working at a arts and crafts store. For context I was 17 at the time. My grandmother had been going through a divorce at the time and was alone for the first time in her entire life. She understandably was having a hard time and tried to unalive herself. I was at work when I found out. Me and my grandma had always been close so when I found out I had to leave. My GM wasn’t there so I went to the assistant manager to tell her the situation and she let me go home. Everything was good until I came in the next day. My GM decided it was appropriate the call me out in front of all my coworkers. Here’s how the interaction went down. GM: “OP I see that you left yesterday, do you really think that was appropriate?”
Me: “Well GM I had a family emergency and needed to go home.”
GM: “I don’t care what your grandmother did to herself, your job should be much more important.”
I was livid afterwards because that was my private information that I had told the managers. I didn’t want that spread to my colleagues. I went into the break room and wrote I quit over everything so they could get the picture, put in my AirPods and walked out past my GM while giving her the finger. I have so many stories of terrible work environments but the one is definitely the worst.
