She works for a contractor doing data processing for a large finance conglomerate. She was invited to apply to the company and get out from under her contractor. She passed background checks and aced the interviews, got a verbal offer, and so on. She was promised an offer letter by yesterday morning. She hasn’t received it.
The February 13 training class for her contractor was canceled despite record profits (sound familiar?)
At the same time, they’re trying to add mandatory overtime to the staff that are there, at least 3 days per week.
The contractor has also sent several nasty-grams to the whole team. They’re a crackdown on some of the bullshit rules, in addition to adding new ones. For example, Phones need to be kept in vehicles and no calls are allowed to be made in the building. It used to be that phones were allowed in break and cafeteria areas. Next, the dress code was tightened up to include “no hooded sweaters, sweatshirts, or jackets of any kind allowed in the building,” and no more crocs.
This is an office environment. I told her they’re prepping for a bloodbath. They’re going to use those dress code violations to build a case of termination for cause so they can try to get out of reporting layoffs. Or they’re going to harass employees with write ups for little rule violations until they quit. I’ve seen it before and it’s one of the dirty tricks employers use.
We can scrape by on what I make but these actions tell me something is about to get very bad for her coworkers.
