My wife’s new employer tried to strong arm her into working whole time when her co worker goes on maternity leave and she’s handing in her notice tomorrow

So my wife changed jobs 2or3 months ago. Her last employer's industry is slowing down and they needed her less and less so she applied for a few jobs. She did three interviews for the new employer for an admin role. They offered her the job and didnt make it clear that life insurance and their side of the pension contribution was included as part of the salary they advertised so her gross pay was lower than expected. They agreed to 3 days per week job share and working extra from time to time to cover leave and very busy periods. She doesnt like the job at all, we thought it was teething problems but it isnt and she doesnt really need to work financially if she doesn't want to. They cant accept that people make mistakes and especially when they are training. They brought her to a performance improvement…

They brought her to a performance improvement process over emailing the wrong internal inbox maybe 4 weeks in when there was no negative impact. The phones are open from 9.30 to 2.30 and there is very little time to take lunch.

So her co worker announced that she is pregnant and will be on maternity leave from October. In ireland nearly everyone takes 6 months and a lot take a year.

Her manager spoke to her and expected my wife to work whole time to cover the maternity leave. He reiterated that she is still on probation (basically a threat) and that she agreed to work more when required, long term wasn't what was agreed. The manager said he cant get approval to get cover for the co worker on leave as if that's my wife's problem.

So she is handing in her notice tomorrow. They've treated her poorly, the job is understaffed and more stressful than it needs to be and she's hated it.

I dont think the manager realised my wife didnt really need the job and expected that she would adjust our childcare around working wholetime long term for fear of being let go.
