My work added a 10% holiday surcharge this Easter long weekend but didn’t pay us any extra

I work at a super small little cafe. The pay is good but it doesn’t pay penalty rates so the pay is the same every day of the week including public holidays. I’m ok with this because i don’t work there that often (I have another job) and the pay is still good. I worked the opening shift on Good Friday and my manager told me to write on the chalkboard in front of the entrance about the 10% surcharge. She was annoyed about it because she felt it was dishonest as none of us were being paid extra and said the charge needed to be manually added to each order and she wasn’t going to add it but to write it on the board anyway in case the cafe manager came. I didn’t add it to any orders that I took and neither did anyone else that worked over…

I didn’t add it to any orders that I took and neither did anyone else that worked over the long weekend. The people working the midday shift on Friday were all complaining about how much of a joke it was to even expect us to add a surcharge.

By the Sunday there wasn’t even anything about a surcharge written on the chalkboard so I’m assuming that everyone completely gave up on even pretending they were going to add it.

It honestly really annoyed me that the cafe manager even wanted to add a surcharge in the first place because not only is that money not being passed onto the people actually working but the people paying the surcharge would be paying it expecting it would be passed onto us. It’s not like we weren’t expecting a lot of business over the weekend and needed the money, we’re a popular cafe with a lot of regulars.

I honestly just hope this is the first and last time that the cafe manager tries to add a surcharge because my annoyance would be anger if it was automatically added to all orders
