My work denied my leave to be in the pride parade

I asked off work to be in the pride parade and they denied it. Do I have a discriminatory claim? I ended up going to the doctors and getting a doctors note so I could be excused. I feel like this is extreme that I had to do this. I work for a local government agency who themself even has a pride float which blows me that they would deny my leave.
