Someone I know was told in February that their job was being eliminated and that their last day was going to be April 14th. They were told they could apply
to work at a different branch of the company or they could collect they’re severance/start unemployment after their last day.
They just found out this past Thursday April 6 right before they were supposed to sign their severance agreements that the company has placed all of them at difference branches around the area and that they have to go to them. If they refuse it will be considered a resignation and they can’t collect a severance or their unemployment.
It seems like the company is doing this so that they don’t need to pay any severances or unemployment so I’m wondering is there are any legal issues. Many of them depend on the money for a living and are effectively being forced to accept work at a branch they didn’t agree to work at. Is this just corporate evil they need to deal with or do they have any options to collect the UI/severance without having to go somewhere they don’t want to?
