I have a new boss at my organization who is requesting I come into the office tomorrow, even though I am remote on Mondays and Fridays, which was negotiated with the organization's director long before they were on staff, and was offered before I came on as part of my compensation. They said it was to discuss some “important and timely items.” When I asked for more detail and stated I would be happy to discuss over the phone or virtually, or when I am back in the office on Tuesday, they replied saying they want me in the office specifically to discuss my remote work arrangement as they “have no information regarding this” as well as our “needs moving forward” – even though we have talked on multiple occasions about this arrangement and everyone in the organization, including the director who approved it originally, knows that I have been remote for the past 6 months on those days.
All this came after this boss refused to review and approve a routine report that was due to a funder on Friday, which should've taken no longer than 10 minutes and is at least the 50th report I have written at this organization (all of which have been approved with no issue previously). Instead they demanded other work products from me at the end of day on Friday which weren't supposed to be due till next Tuesday, forcing me to work unpaid overtime (I get in trouble if I go over 40 hours, so I deleted the extra hour from my time card).
We have no full time HR person, HR duties are supposedly split between 4 staff members, only one of whom I felt comfortable sharing this issue with. They have stated it would not be considered insubordination as the arrangement is longstanding and was made with our director long before this new boss was hired. Other colleagues think I should show up in person to show “good faith” even though since their hiring, this new boss has shown none to me in return, nor is this an issue to me worth showing “good faith” for.
What should I do? Am I risking termination if I respectfully decline the request? Is it a show of “bad faith” to advocate for myself in this regard? Thank you for your input and perspective here.
