New dress code implemented at work with strict consequences

Hi everyone, after a year of working for this company we were sent an email telling us we now have to follow a strict new dress code. Obviously implementing a dress code isn’t illegal, but wondering what the legality of sending someone home without pay/eventually firing them was for not following it is, especially since it was not in our original contract. Some of this stuff is common sense but some of it seems quite extreme, and I do not own any of the “smart casual” clothing they are describing. I work at a retail company in California if that is at all helpful
