Newsflash: Non-profits still exploit their workers.

I work at a mental health organization in Indiana where I get paid $17.64 per hour to teach life skills to kids (one being a 4-year-old girl with PTSD). We accrue PTO hours as we work. Today, I received a written warning for using too much “unscheduled PTO” in the last quarter. I followed the rules with it by calling in an hour ahead of time when I had to do so. All of it was used when my 1.5 year old daughter was sick. Apparently, I have to plan ahead for my daughter to get sick and am not allowed to use the PTO I earned how I please. Please do not make the mistake of thinking NFPs won't exploit their workers because they have a “social mission.” This one in particular “emphasizes” self-care for employees.
