i’m an adjunct professor. i had several rounds of interviews for a full time position with a college. they went really well. i was told as much by folks on the hiring committee. i felt really confident.
i just learned that they closed the position without hiring anyone
i’m super nervous that the economic downturn is gonna mean that i am absolutely SOL after a decade of getting a phd and working 80 hours a week adjuncting just to fail to make ends meet.
there are so few full time academic jobs to begin with because of the predatory, exploitative model of higher education. now a recession? the whole reason i went to grad school is because i couldn’t find work after graduating with a BA during the great recession.
i can’t do this bs anymore. my record is impeccable. i am an award winning prof who is well liked and respected by students, colleagues, and supervisors alike and i cannot land a job with a fair wage.
might just leave education all together despite loving it and being very good at it. maybe i’ll become a server or something
