I just turned 45 last week, and on my birthday I quit the part-time retail gig I had only held for two weeks. (I’m a content creator and Uber driver so it’s not much if a loss). I’m blown away by the fact that retail and service work has only gotten worse in the 27 years I’ve been in the workforce.
In 2022 I made less money at a $15/hour job than I did with $4.25/hour jobs in the late 1990s. Of course I have more expenses these days (I lived with my late mom as a teen/twentysomething), but still! What the hell?
