Offering accommodations for neck pain, feels like a way of asking “how can we get you to work through the pain?” (Work from home)

My neck has been hurting for almost exactly 2 years, and everyday it hurts a little but some days are worse than others. On those days I tend to take advantage of my Unlimited PTO. Well on Friday I submitted the call-out form saying I will take the day off and I had HR in my DMs not minutes later. She was asking me if there’s some sort of accommodation that they can provide, like a more ergonomic setup in my home. She was really nice about it. But the more I think on it, the more it feels like a passive aggressive way of asking how I can just work through the pain! Ive been to so many doctors about this and most recently a neurologist who gave me an MRI, found nothing and dusted his hands off. I ended up arguing with them about that “we’re done here”…

I ended up arguing with them about that “we’re done here” attitude, but I digress.

But if a team of 7 doctors over 2 years, and many MRIs, physical therapy, etc couldn’t help find a solution… I really don’t think a tech company will be able to either. Ever.

I spent a lot of money on my work set up. Stand up desk, gaming chair, triple-monitor mount at eye level. My setup is not the problem tho and doesn’t contribute to my issue.

It’s usually stress or a funky (unintended) sleeping position that exacerbates it.

I haven’t replied to HR yet, cuz fuk them I’m on my off time. But I plan to detail in my reply about all the doctors I’ve been too, and my expensive setup and how it’s not related to it. And ultimately a “no thanks”

My Qs:

  • Am I being too sensitive about their approach here?

  • What advice would you give me for navigating this convo? (Do’s and dont’s)

I’ll happily accept any other comments or criticisms. Thank you in advance and please excuse the long novel!
