old human resources horror story

this was about a year ago, start of last september. i was working as a seasonal employee at a well known craft store. well, me and a few others on staff were openly trans. one of our floor managers was super religious and had a habit of directly misgendering us to our faces and over the head sets. one day she misgendered me over the head sets after me and other workers were told by management she was told intentionally misgendering people was discriminatory. she was asking me to do something outside my job descriptions so i simply replied to her “my pronouns are he/him or they/them thank you.” ten seconds later as i’m working go-backs she points at me from across the floor and yells at me to stop. i froze up and had no clue what she was coming over to me for. i was at the frames…

this was about a year ago, start of last september. i was working as a seasonal employee at a well known craft store. well, me and a few others on staff were openly trans. one of our floor managers was super religious and had a habit of directly misgendering us to our faces and over the head sets.

one day she misgendered me over the head sets after me and other workers were told by management she was told intentionally misgendering people was discriminatory. she was asking me to do something outside my job descriptions so i simply replied to her “my pronouns are he/him or they/them thank you.”

ten seconds later as i’m working go-backs she points at me from across the floor and yells at me to stop. i froze up and had no clue what she was coming over to me for. i was at the frames counter at the time and when she got to me she soo-ed away the frames worker and put her hand on my shoulder and said “op i know you’re upset but you have to understand that that’s against my religion. it’d be much better for us both if you just realized i’m doing my best. let’s keep this between us okay?”

well to tell you i was floored was an understatement. i basically went on my break right after (oh yeah she made sure to intimidate me but forgot i hadn’t been allowed to take my first break and was late to lunch.) in the break room i started crying and the worker from the frames counter (another trans person) and my only cool floor manager told me to call hr.

big mistake.

i filed a report with my personal contact info and they decided the best way to get in contact with me was by calling the managers at the store. they supposedly never said why they were looking for me. when i finally got them to get in contact with me someone took my verbal report and gave me a case number. i worked there maybe a month more and never saw the case file be updated once.

i kept having bad encounters with my floor manager, even had her insist she take me home in the middle of a rainstorm because my car was broken down. she preached to me almost the entire ride.

i quit at the start of this year and occasionally will check in on the store. afaik transphobic floor manager still works there and there has been almost 100% turn over of trans employees at that location.
