I left a job that massively underpaid me where I worked 80 hour weeks and due to the stress gained 40lbs, lost a ton of hair, and gained a big drinking problem (2.5 years sober) for another one that paid 2x as much with a great work/life balance.
I just went back to the CTO of the first company to ask for a letter of recommendation because I at least did do incredible work for them and he told me I “stabbed him in the back” by leaving (they did lose $600 million in valuation because of it).
WOW.
Maybe they should learn to properly compensate their employees.
It is a COMPANY'S responsibility to retain talent. Talent does not owe ANYTHING to a company when a better offer comes along.
What an asshole.
edit: This happened in 2019, and they're still this angry about it! They lost over $600 million in valuation then (from over a billion) directly due to my quitting and are now worth under $100 million (went public) are a penny stock and are about to be de-listed from Nasdaq.
From the way they are reacting, I'm getting the feeling I severely damaged their business even more than I thought considering they're still this mad 4 years later.
