Antiwork

one year later

So it's been a full year now since I walked out. A little back story, I worked at a small security company as an installation tech and sales guy and there was just one other guy I worked with. Now at the start of the pandemic my coworker was told by the owner that due to his age he wasn't allowed to go work in the field so he went from doing what I was doing to being full time sales, ok whatever it was the slow season so I had more time in the field and less in the office and I enjoyed that. Well as the year progressed it got busy so even less time in the office but still just me in the field. By 2021 though I was starting to get burned out mentally and then tragedy struck, beginning of April my dad lost his battle…

By 2021 though I was starting to get burned out mentally and then tragedy struck, beginning of April my dad lost his battle with cancer. Now as I'm sure most of you understand getting that news hurts. My mom called into my work to try and get me back to the office so when I got the news I would be there instead of on a job site or worse while driving, and as some of you are guessing it didn't go down like that. Instead I get a call from our monitor on duty while driving back to the office telling me I need to call my mom asap so I ended up getting that news in the worst possible scenario while driving a very large work van. I made it back to the office when I just lost it.

I end up taking a week off to go back to my home town in another state and and help my sisters deal with my dad's things as my parents are divorced. Now I had gotten a system similar to life alert for my dad through the company I worked at because of my dad limitations with his cancer, he had lost the ability to squat and was weak from treatment so if he went down he wasn't getting back up on his own. I had powered down that system and packed it up while cleaning out my dad's apartment. The following light I get a text message from a different monitor informing me that my dad's system has failed to test. Now with what happened I feel I should have never gotten any notification about is because my work knew I was gone because my dad passed so I was furious but mistakes happen and I don't completely express my anger on the monitor seeing I don't even know what one it is at this point.

After eturning to work a week later I express my need for a 4 day work week for my mental health and it is approved by the owner. So at this point I am working Tuesday through Friday and end of May is coming around and with that my dad's funeral so I take another week off to attend that seeing how it is in another state. That all went without incident. 2 weeks after I get back we end up having a meeting with a rep from the company we get our alarm equipment from and during this meeting the owner just goes off on me because I am only working 4 days a week and I will quote this “if you want to work then come in and work if not then don't” knowing full well why I was working 4 days a week. Now I am very good at biting my tongue and not saying stuff in fits of rage and I have other customer service fields to that for that but I was fuming and I had another install to do that day that I went to do. The rest of the day during the install it was just nothing but rage just pure murderous rage. When I get back to the office the owner is gone and he was probably lucky that he was and my coworker just felt the hate I now had for the company coming off of me because for the last 3 hours of the day he kept begging me not to quit. I spent my last hour there cleaning out my office and removing my personal information from my work computer like my Google account and saved passwords turned in my company credit card, company gas card, cell phone, keys, and access card and walked out.

Now about every 3 months I get a call or text message from my coworker with offeres to come back and that is usually shot down with my counter offer on what it would take to get me back, each time I raise the minimum of what would be required.

To anyone who reads this just remember you and your family come first before anything else in this world. The less replaceable you are the more replaceable they will treat you in a more specialized field and fight for what you are worth

Yes I loved what I did and I miss doing it but I love being with my family more and now I am enjoying my other passions and making money with it as well
