New Job Same Stress

I worked for three years at a company where I was regularly bullied and harassed. I have anxiety and that was know at my old job. People either deliberately made fun of me (by reenacting my panic attacks in front of my managers) or else told management that I was using sick days cause I was anxious (even when I was sick with a cold or tonsillitis). My boyfriend (now husband) suggested we move and I agreed and quit that job and started at a new company. The issue now is that this new job is very complicated to learn and involves a lot more work than was communicated to me during interviews. The expectation seems to be that being overloaded is the norm. I feel all of my old burnout feelings returning and I dread going to work. Financially and from an insurance standpoint I am not sure I…

Question from antiwork about Holidays

Background: I work at a 24/7 operation in middle management. I’ve got an ear to the table rather than a seat at it, but my manager has a vote and I can help discuss options and be heard with good ideas. The decisions are made collectively one level above me, but I interact with all decision makers daily. I want to be a voice to advocate for the best system for hourly folks, but have limited experience with a continuous operation. We have a Building Manager who doesn’t seem to care about anything other than customer service and will seemingly sacrifice moral and anything else to get the job done and goal met. We had a building meeting today that went less than well for the management group. We discussed numbers for production that are falling despite wages that have gone up by 30%+ in the last year and a…

Job hunting secrecy

Why is it that when looking for a new position we have to do it in secret? Interviewing requires taking time off for an “appointment”. Is this just an American cultural thing or does this happen in other countries as well.

Jobs where you get to do mostly nothing?

I currently work as a security guard and in a 8.5 hour day I really only do about a 40 minutes of real work. Most of my time I'm just sitting at a desk looking at my phone waiting for the time to pass. I want to know, what are some other jobs I could do where I get to almost do no work and get paid for it? If you have one of these jobs what do you do?

Calling off

I’m having pretty gnarly period cramps so I called off today. The manager told me to try our other 3 employees, but they have a limited schedules due to school, and always have. Trying to get them to pick up a shift is typically useless. I have great attendance and my last call off was more than 6 months ago. The manager told me that they can’t work the whole day. Any advice?

Tendered my resignation yesterday but rescinded when I was offered a substantial raise. Now I’m concerned and seeking advice

I submitted my letter of resignation yesterday after accepting a position at a different company which carried with it a 15% base pay increase. The director's response was to immediately get the admin team and HR involved, and within a few hours they presented a counter offer that I found satisfactory. The exact terms were an immediate 13% while maintaining my eligibility for an additional, performance-based raise at the end of May. The performance-based increases have already been determined by our performance reviews from last year and it is likely that I will get at least an additional 3% increase from that. Nothing is set in stone, but my performance review meets all of the requirements for an additional raise so I'm not worried about getting screwed out of the second raise. What I am worried about is that I found out today that, after I left for the day…

Quitting jobs for your health — how many people do you know?

How many people do you know that quit jobs, without a new job lined up, for their health? I know of one that quit for their physical health, and four for mental health. Three of those were at one company over about 2 months, and that place was such a disaster that I'm still trying to understand it 4 years later.

It’s taken every fiber of my being not to just up and quit on a daily basis

Posting on my sus alt account so I won't be tracked by my employer. The company I work for is collapsing around me, half the coworkers I like have gotten double their salaries by moving companies, and to make matters worse I have been threatened with the fact that I work under an at-will state several times. Honestly I just want to at-will them back but I'm still in the process of interviewing with other places, and I don't want to screw over my team lead like that because everyone at the company is hurting right now.
