I had an incident at work a few weeks ago and it’s totally opened my eyes. I’m a manager at a cell phone store so customer interactions are my all-day everyday reality. I try to keep things light and have fun so I occasionally jest with my employees and customers. A few weeks ago, I made a joke that my supervisor jumped in on. The customers laughed and our employee laughed. Our employee approached me a few minutes after and said they didn’t appreciate the joke and it made them feel belittled. I just felt awful. I immediately apologized, promised them it wouldn’t happen again, and asked to make sure this was the first time I had made them feel that way. He assured me it was and that he always felt comfortable coming to me if they had a problem. Apparently they also went to our supervisor and let…
At this point this is pretty much old news to most here. A little back story I guess, I'm 26, I have worked manual labor my whole adult life. I can't afford to take vacation or miss work. The biggest luxury I offer myself is a relatively new midsize truck and I can usually play video games on my spare time. I always wondered growing up, why I couldn't make more money, I would always ask co workers and superiors. Their answers where always, 'Well if the company paid us more they would have to jack up the prices of their products' . I just thought okay makes sense it's the order of things. As I got older and prices of everything continued to go up but wages didn't go up, I figure somethings is wrong. If a business can't afford to pay their employees a decent wage, should they…
I recently started a new job as a writer. Sometimes, I answer the work phone and talk with businesses, members of the community, etc. Yesterday, there was a concern with a business owner I spoke to. I didn’t have an answer for them, so I offered to transfer them. It seemed like they were a little upset that I could not give them an answer but I explained that I was new and they were understanding of that. I went to transfer them and I accidentally put them on hold, which the phone instruction sheet says not to do. My bosses seemed to be pretty understanding at first, as none of us are gonna be perfect. However, I ended up getting a write up because of it. The person on the line was upset that they had to wait a long time to talk to someone, and my manager was…
Switching back to my old role…
3 months ago I took on a new job with the same company I’ve been with for nearly 4 years now. It is a position that pays roughly 52k a year, an increase of my previous job which was around 41k. So it was a big jump for a job that turned out to be a terrible fit for me. It doesn’t really suit my strengths and interests. I travel a lot for it, which is alright, but I’m paying rent to not be home. I left my old job because the supervisor at the time gave me daily anxiety. She has since left and the new supervisor is much more cooperative and less on a power trip. She says she has two positions open on my old team, and I am considering taking up her offer since I am VERY unhappy in this new job. It’s unlikely she can…
How would this change your life?
