(First of all, I just want to point out that this not a backhanded judgement towards anyone here and that I am fully aware that I am not a “normal” person. Just wanting people's opinion on this) Truth be told work is the only thing keeping me out of bed. And it's paid work. Work that I got through studying something I only realized halfway through I did not care about yet I was too far in to change. Work that gives me a better living than others that I (sort of) believe I earned because I put the (not as great as it could have been) effort in. Work that allows me to buy things that make me happy and hoard away in case I get too old or get into an accident and am prevented from work. I do not plan to ever get a relationship or start…
What do you love to do?
This question has probably already been asked, but I wanted to have some fun this Sunday afternoon so here it is again. What do you love to do? What would you do with your time if money wasn't a factor and you had all the time and resources you needed? It's okay if kicking back alone or having fun with friends and family is your answer, and working is not involved. I love to write, I love to read, and I love to talk about important subjects with smart people. Looking forward to reading about everybody's interests!
How it is these days
Welp the title says it all, I signed a company that ties me to them for several years. If I want to quit I have to pay them 2 months salary, I make around $37,000 after taxes, 2 months wouldn’t be possible, even with my wife making what she does. I’m wanting to challenge this but that costs money. I feel like I have a case since it’s a boilerplate contract and I believe it’s mostly the same for everyone which, is NOT liquidated damages as claimed, instead, a penalty to quit. Tl;dr: can’t quit my job for a better paying gig because if I do I owe “liquidated damages” Edit: I’m salaried not a contractor, located in non-union friendly southern state in USA
Every job posting on indeed:
“Come one, come all! Sell your life away for $15 an hour PLUS DENTAL! We're all family here! Make us enough money by standing/lifting for 8+ plus hours a day, then maybe we'll treat you with a bit of respect! Must be willing to deal with shitty customers and always be smiling! HAHAHAHA I LOVE THIS JOB AND SO WILL YOU! We promise to make it your problem when you experience burn out! $50 sign on bonus for all you broke suckers!”
Hands down the most common argument against living wage. Boy do these people live in a fantasy world because plenty of supposedly “respectful” jobs are severely under-paid such as teachers, nurses, firefighters, and paramedics. These people sacrifice their youth, their mental health and sometimes their own lives for society yet only 2 paycheques away from sleeping on the pavement. Besides, do people really think burger flippers only— flip burgers? They have to run the registers, deal with dine-in, pickup and online orders, clean and sanitise, check inventory for expiry dates etc. All of this require skills. Any good fast food establishments you have gone to cannot be run by 16-year-olds who are only 3 days into their first jobs. These skills being easily acquired doesn't change that a business can turn into shambles real quick if workers don't have them. Strangely enough, “Burger flippers shouldn't be paid” crowd is often…
We had a call out for the overnight shift tonight which, since we are down 3 people on that shift already means we are stretched thin as it is and is becoming hard to find someone to fill whenever someone calls out with a family emergency on the weekends for the overnight. I've been avoiding overtime for a couple months now ever since the manager declined to give me any of the open morning shifts, saying that he doles morning shifts out solely on seniority. Up till this point I was praised as the hardest one working here and always being available when needed, but when he gave morning shifts to another co-worker who frequently calls out, generally avoids work period, and lies to get attention at others expense I declined to put anymore effort into the job. And then the guy ahead of me on the totem pole changed…
I just started a new job not too long ago and I’m in the middle of moving. The check didn’t have my shift differential on it and that extra 2$ an hour for full time work is a decent chunk of change loss from my pay. I called off because I can’t wait the two weeks for them to fix it on the next check. my bills are past due and my insurance needs paid within the week. I drive for Uber and I get paid same day so I’ll be making up the difference over the weekend. Wish me luck
