Is going to HR really that important?

I'm not employed right now, i'm in my 20s and I read a lot of posts in which people say the “i'm going to go to HR” phrase like HR is some king of police. Can HR do something about situations like the ones that are posted here or it's like something you need to do before you go further with the complaint?

What do y’all think? Is this constructive dismissal?

Ex-wife works at Walmart, hired during the pandemic, and was recently told she's losing her “sweetheart hours”. She's been getting around 32 hours a week for the last couple years now, with a set schedule of daytime hours and Fridays and Saturdays off. She's also making $1 an hour more than all the other people in her department. She actually enjoys her job and likes most of her coworkers, and has worked the same department the whole time. This week they only have her scheduled for like 4 hours, then like a week off, then another 4 or 5 hour shift. I told her it definitely looks like they're trying to get rid of her and recommended she spend her unexpected free time looking for a new job. This is Arizona and the law for constructive dismissal claims requires a 15 day written notice to give the employer the opportunity…

College is digging my grave.

So I am in college. I have an associates degree, however it was just in my basic course that I took to save money at a community College, with the promise that I'd only need to spend two years at a university. I've been at this university for 1 year. I'm in 30k debt and I'm supposed to be here one more year, staying within that 30k. However because of how my school schedules it's classes based on whether it's fall or spring semester, I won't be able to graduate till spring 2024. Putting me in around 10-15k more debt. I know I won't ever get a good enough job after this. I will never be able to pay this off, but I'm stuck, I feel like I've gone too far to quit now, wasted too much time and money, but I dont know how much more I have to…

common practice at my place of work, to justify low pay for high performance.

It's not really a raise is it? Let's put it this way. My work a few years ago applied a 'market adjuatment' to the department I was working in because their independent study of comparative positions in other companies revealed that we were (as we told them for two years) grossly underpaid for our work. This market adjustment was applied to the Starting wage of all agents in the department, which meant that anyone who got a comp raise that year and who were close to or above the adjustment saw little to no increase at all. Don't get me wrong, they were on The right track here but it didn't end there. More than half of the department got increases of less than 100$ a year, because their tenure meant they had already been making close to the new market STARTING WAGE for our department. Now, when it came…

Why aren’t we taking a longer look at worker cooperatives?

With the massive amount of turbulence in the labor market and high levels of underemployment, why aren’t more workers considering starting cooperatives as an alternative to working for the someone else? A driver-owned Uber or Lyft would make total sense. The reason there aren’t enough drivers is because the company barely pays you when you factor in all the overhead as a driver.

went on an interview yesterday

As the title said I went on an interview. Three people in the room. Cfo, hr manager, and an “accountant”. ( I am a 15 year veteran in accounting). I hammered linked in and everything about this company and everyone in accounting is an accountant except the cfo (cT F*ING ORIFICE) is his nickname for me. During this interview in which I drove 2 hours to get to ( dont get me started on fuel prices) the hr manager stepped out to deal with a payroll issue. Perfectly acceptable. Having been in payroll before when someone is mad about pay you drop everything and figure it out ( so far not mad as I understand and they are taking care of an employee) this ” accountant” starts grilling me and within about 2 minutes I thought you are not an ” accountant” but a controller. Its about this time that…

No OT Pay

I agreed to work overtime this week after being told that I would make time and half. I was then told (today) that I won’t actually make OT pay because I have to work overtime two weeks in a row to make it. So I’m calling my boss and saying never mind, you can find someone else to work those hours. Wish me luck

We do all understand that the economic system we have is designed to eventually make us all poor correct?

I think one of the biggest reasons we don't have even more people fighting for change, is because so many people don't understand how we've been slowly getting robbed for at least the last 50-100 years. This economic system is designed to bring every single one of us, from upper middle class, to the people in poverty making minimum wage, down to the point that eventually we will all be on a similar level, and depend on our government to survive. The majority of average American workers yearly raises, do not even come close to covering the actual increase in prices that we see come out of our pocket. The inflation number is irrelevant, there's been many studies that show the number they give us is not accurate to what we see come out of our pockets from actual price increases yearly. You yourself can probably verify this by comparing…
