where’s the money

Wall Street made 31 billion dollars in profits in 2021 (https://www.osc.state.ny.us/press/releases/2021/10/dinapoli-wall-st-2021-profits-near-record-levels). During a raging pandemic. I thought the markets basically find price values within people buying and selling stock? I know retail isn’t spending money on the stock market , not that kind of money. I mean who runs Wall Street anyways. Could it be… they’ve rigged the system for their gain? All this money isn’t for public use. It’s private gain. Yachts and houses . Sports cars , fancy trips. Making a few people richer and richer. Isn’t the NYSE like the capitol of the economy? Huge importance yes? Lots of money flowing thru. How come the average person knows nothing about it and yet it runs so well. It’s almost like a private money club. And when these money club members do illegal things to make a lot of money? Oh they pay a small fine. And that…

Finally worked up the nerve to ask for a raise, and was shot down even after being told I deserve one.

I’ll keep details brief and sparse because a few of my coworkers browse Reddit so there’s a very good chance they’ll see this. Even though I’ve only been at my job a few months, I came to them with experience that not all my coworkers have, and even upper management has mentioned how much of an asset I’ve become in such a short amount of time. My hourly wage was recently increased, but this wasn’t a raise so much as them bumping up everyone’s pay to the same as what they are currently hiring at. I’ve recently been taking on a lot of extra tasks, so I worked up the nerve to request a meeting with my immediate supervisor. I told her that based on my experience alone I should already be making more than someone just starting out, and that all the extra work they’ve been having me do…

Man nearly loses $33K deposited at major bank. Bank reps refuse to help. This is how much the pennies we work for mean to them.

How long does it take a low-wage worker to save up $33K with exploding living costs? The man in this story seems to be upper-middle class, but just imagine if this had been an average working-class stiff. You work your butt off for your country, community, company. You take the hits to be a good citizen. But when an emergency happens you hear, “There's nothing we can do” from the Big (Wo)Man. God help you if you look poor or don't speak English “properly” or aren't a home-owner so local government doesn't give a d@mn about you. No wonder record numbers of people are opting out…

Can someone explain to me how getting sent home early from an hourly job is basically no different from taking money out of that person’s pocket?

When your sent home early instead of working your full scheduled shift it is basically taking money out of said persons pocket. If I'm budgeting based on my hours/pay and I'm sent home two hours early once a week every week that's alot of money missing when bills roll around. Cutting someone for labor helps nobody, half a percentage of a point isn't gonna fix labor and only screws one person over. Two hours a week is the same as 104 hours at the end of the year. I'm just really tired of people acting as if it's ok and justified to send someone with bills to pay home.

I left my stable job for a gig-based job and I couldn’t be happier.

I don't know if this fits here but allow me to tell my story. First of all, I have to clarify that I am in a position where I can afford to convert to doing gig based jobs. My vehicle, which I use for work is fully paid off. The same goes for my tiny little apartment. I still have some credit card debt to clear but other than that, my essential monthly expenses are just bills, food, maintenance for my vehicle, and gas/petrol for work. In my last “stable” job, i had to do 12 hour shifts, five or six days a week. Without getting into too much details, I had to be at work an hour before shift and an stay an hour after shift for pre and post work stuff. Add in commuting and that would be 16 hours each day just for work. My standard work…

Corporate Leaders, Landlords, Lenders, Insurance

We need to find ways to cut the revenue stream to the people who are keeping us oppressed by profiting from basic necessities. If a company makes money, that money should be shared with the workers. We don't need unions, we need a general labor strike. Combined with this, we need a rent/mortgage strike. Stop paying people for being rich. These two things would indirectly be a step toward harming the mechanisms that make healthcare a commodity instead of a utility. Our species is in a life or death battle with Capitalism. We're not winning.

Finally quit my truly awful job! A Saga!

I started working in September 2017, after being out of work for several years due to mental health issues. I applied at a gas station/convenience store in my area that had some truly wonderful coworkers. We went through 3 managers, 2 district managers and were typically short staffed. It was great until 3 days before Christmas 2018 when we were robbed at gunpoint(a young coworker and I were working at the time, both of us have anxiety problems). We were open from 5am-12am and the robbery happened right before 8pm. Management and our district manager at the time showed up, along with police, etc. By the time the police left, it was just about 11pm. My younger coworker was really shaken up, to the point they were actually shaking. I hear them doing something with coins in their drawer and figure they're counting out the drawer for the night. Nope!…

How a promotion made me quit…

A couple of years ago I was grad at a big 4 accounting firm. I hadn't majored in accounting at University so they offered to pay for additional study to build up my accounting foundation (with a one year bonding period). There was also the option to apply for 4 hours a week off as PAID study leave, I applied and it was approved by all the partners and HR. Fast forward, I am on my last 2 accounting papers and for my job I was typically known as a “fixer” (whenever the clients systems weren't working right or they'd buggered something up, I would get sent out. It was very difficult and demanding work that they could charge very well for.) I have my annual review and my managing partner said she really went to bat for me and they have decided to promote me to the next level,…
