Set today aside for interviews
I wanted to share with you guys about the day I’m having as a job seeker. I currently have a job in IT project management and am looking for a new job that will pay me appropriately. I start getting requests for interviews and decide to set them all up for today. They include 3 Teams interviews and 1 automated – talk to the camera interview. 11:00 First interview of the day, I have my suit on, drank two cups of coffee, and have looked up the interviewers background on LinkedIn to casually mention something about their background to show I did my homework. I log into the Teams meeting and wait. 11:22 After sending emails to the interviewer she calls me and apologizes for oversleeping. As we talk I discover the high paying contract role I applied for doesn’t actually exist (has been filled). The interviewer explains her recruiting…
I don’t add coworkers, and especially bosses, on my personal social media. That’s what my LinkedIn is for. I am very strict about this as it has burned me in the past. I also like having a very clear line between work and personal life. These days employers and colleagues try to blur that line with social media and I want no part of that. Well, my boss asked me if I would like to be an admin for our professional FB page. I really don’t want to. But I already am not participating in enough as it is. I am not planning on going to our event at a local festival next month (which is on a Saturday. I already have plans with my husband. And, again. It’s a Saturday. I don’t work Saturdays. Mon-Fri is enough damn days of work.) I choose to spend my lunches alone while…
Haha it’s good to laugh once in a while.
Background: I decided to move away from direct social services (low salary) and towards administration/policy (high salary). However, I like doing direct care work and want a strong application for the grad program I'm interested in. I found a part time job (48 hrs a MONTH) at a local women's shelter, one that I knew from a previous job and had many positive interactions with. The pay is low compared to my cost of living ($19/hr) but it is not my main income, so I'm fine with it. : As part of my hiring documents, I had to get a document notarized and obtain a 3yr motor vehicle report. Both of which were about $6 each and I was expected to cover the costs myself. : The training schedule is all on Zoom (yay!) but there's about 3 hrs worth of mandatory, “on your own” training. Aka, not being paid…
I’ve been in my current role for 4 years and have received $1 raise throughout the duration of my employment. I literately cannot afford to work there. I asked for double my salary, which they of course can’t do. However, my boss is “allegedly” negotiating a 25K raise for me, but it’s been dragging on. I know that the job posting is still up from my notice, but they said they are pausing interviews. A recruiter sends me MY CURRENT ROLE to me on LinkedIn and via email. “Your profile really stood out to me” HA. The title has changed to VIP admin assistant, but bull shit titles are a whole other conversation. They are offering a salary range of 5K-15K above my current pay but still well under what the job is worth. It’s been known that there is little to no mobility in my role unless my boss…
It seems almost half the posts on here are reposts. Recently someone made up an entire text exchange with an imaginary boss just for upvotes and to promote their only fans. Seriously, this use to be a great place to discuss work reform but now it’s turned into any other sub on Reddit. Full of karma bots and reposts and nothing is being done about it. I feel like I can’t even trust half the stories I read now. This entire movement is losing my trust and hope. Edit: and we still haven’t recovered from the interview disaster, or the several other interviews they did/agreed to do while claiming they speak for all of us. Some of the same people are still here moderating this subreddit.
To whom it may concern, I have worked for WP for 5 months and in that time I have learned that: a. Corporate leadership or should I say Dave and Neil are the most tone deaf people I have encountered. As a part time employee who makes 15.25/hr, I do not really care about WP's successes in making millions of dollars as they like to tout in their randomly sent “assignments.” How am I benefitting from making these assholes rich? b. WP has reduced us all to numbers using metrics to gauge our productivity. I feel that is degrading and dehumanizing. We are people, not numbers and produce much more than WP gives us credit for. They look at the numbers and miss the big picture of how we all connect with and serve WP customers; there-by making them millions and getting nothing in return aside from a smile and…
Never work for your friends
I saw a post in here earlier today about not working for small businesses and I can’t agree more. Back in Nov, I left a steady (but toxic) job with benefits bc my friend/stylist offered me a receptionist job in her salon that was at the time pulling in over 70 new people a month and on track to be a million dollar salon in 5 years. It seemed like a perfect solution to how burnt out I was at the time. In the beginning it was great and I was much happier, had 37 hours (less than the 40 agreed upon), and had the holidays and Sundays off to spend with my family. Then, one of the lead stylists left and everything went to shit. We weren’t making money and were in the red and kept having subpar work leave the salon. In Jan, the only reason we survived…
