I basically didn’t have a “real job” for about a little over a year after graduating college. It was amazing. Contrary to what people told me about not “working”, I maintained a great routine of diet/exercise, real work (eg working on my garden where like 30% of my calories came from, or on the house I was living in, writing/working on my website/blog, doing some freelance software/development work), hobbies/entertainment, etc. I spent very little money by mostly walking places despite them being far away as a result of my living in a somewhat suburban area. I had mental clarity and always had energy and a vision of the future. I’ve since started having to work due to having to move, and everything has gone to complete garbage. I’m literally cognitively and physically exhausted virtually all the time after work. I can’t concentrate on literally anything, have a constant low grade…
Small victories
background: i currently am employed part time at a small local ice cream/coffee store. i only get shifts from may-september. originally 30-40 hours a week which dwindled to around 15 to nothing because of winter. reasons im considering quitting: • i was given a giant stack of papers to fill out. one of which told me i cannot discuss my pay rate with my coworkers, which i believe is not applicable in ontario, canada? i am making 50 cents more than minimum wage. • i feel unfairly scrutinized compared to my coworkers. in the beginning, my manager would come up to me and say “we need to talk in the back.” she would essentially scold me for standing for a minute while someone was ordering because i was “doing nothing” when i could be cleaning something (even if i just finished a task) mind you im a whole 21 years…
I live with an immunocompromised family member who also has kidney disease and takes 15-20 pills every day. While I’ll probably survive if I catch COVID, I can’t risk my family by taking public transit and commuting to work. I literally got hired remotely and have been working from home ever since and now they want us back in the office on a hybrid model twice a week. I know many of my colleagues are upset with this arrangement as well. I’m not comfortable in the office either because people remove their masks and positivity rate is still high at above 10%. Today I spoke to my manager and aside from the above reason, I also mentioned that it’s a huge time waster and costs a lot of money. Probably shouldn’t have said that. Either way, they said this is not a remote position and will work with me to…
Resignation story
This is not my story. It happened to my cousin. So when she was hired in this new company – a billion dollar multinational company, she was told that she would get 1 year WFH in the beginning. Great. She accepted the offer. But 3 months in, her manager started to force her to come to office saying it was some miscommunication from HR side and all other team members have already started to come to office and so should she. He told her variety of reasons why WFH is not good for the company bla bla knowledge gaps bla bla. So she decides to quit bcz she can't move to another city. It was never her plan. She thought she will just work there for 1 year and then quit. But now she has to quit in 3 months Now the day she calls her manager and told him…
I’m in my first year in a new industry, previously coming from baking, and this is one of the only jobs I’ve had where they expect me to fully train a new employee without any add compensation. I used to get paid 1.5 an hour AT LEAST when I used to train new cake decorators, because training someone is a lot of damn work. Not to mention my tips suffer because this person is new, and honestly it would be easier for me to just help the customer myself. The only reason I’m holding onto this job is because I need money to move, I’m itching to tell management to get bent and do it themselves. Any advice how to approach this situation is greatly appreciated.
Must pay attention to detail.
Why are you here?
There is 1.7 million of you. All with different experience, motivations, and purpose. Why are you here? I am here because: I want everybody to be treated with RESPECT and DIGNITY from their employer. I want fair wages that can give people a real life. I want to see people appreciated for the time, not exploited. This movement to me isn’t about laziness, shorter work weeks or a couple extra bucks and hour. It’s about POWER. It’s a shift from the top to the bottom. From the grasshoppers to the ants. It’s realizing maximizing profits and paying shareholders isn’t as important and the health and sanity of the people that you depend on to make that happen. To me it’s 1.7 million people who are tired of being treated as an ends to a means. You are just as important as anybody else regardless of what you do, or have…
