Better to quit or be fired?

Long story short my spouse has an abusive manager. Life has been hell. Well, I have some money coming my way that I can get an advance on to help us get through. So while I don’t like the thought of us not having an income we would be… ok… for a short while. Anyway, things have been wfh for months and now they are supposed to go back. That’s fine. My spouse was prepared. But we are iced in. We are in a valley with three ways out. All icy hills. And we can’t get traction to get out. Other, better, vehicles than ours are having trouble too. He told his boss that he can’t get out and was told that it’s “fine” and that he can wfh today, but he “has to” go in tomorrow. Things have been like this for years. Every issue is responded to as…

US here, is 5 days a YEAR for sick time really enough?

I am already halfway done with my annual pittance of 40 hours sick time. Once for my kid and once for me. Both legit sick. Now here comes late in the year I will need to choose between possible being fired, coming in sick or unpaid time off. All bad options. This needs to change. Double it at minimum and you might actually fill some of those “job openings” I hear so much about.

$600 of salary worth fussing about?

My organization is growing and we posted a role today that is very similar to my position, in both types of responsibility and amount, but in a different department. The requirements also do not contain any kind of post secondary education, while mine requires a minimum of a degree. But the salary for this position is $600 more than what I make, and I’ve been with the company for over 5 years. Is this worth speaking up about? If so, how do I approach it? I’m NOT versed in standing up for myself in the workplace, but thanks to this sub I did mentally flag this and my knee jerk reaction was to take offence. My company has recently been showing initiative in staff retention practices so I’m just left feeling a little insulted here, even though it’s only $600 a year.

Burning employees out from the start.

This tech company I just got a job with offered me a position and I took it because it was okay pay and a condensed work week. (Rotating 3 and 4 12 hour days each week). First day of orientation was today. Sat there all day with no questions answered about how training was going to go until the last min. Then I was told I have to attend training M-F all week and then get only Saturday off before I start 4 12 hour days from Sunday to Wednesday. That’s how you burn out new employees and have them quit before they even really get started. They should maybe think about that before they post their “DeSpErAtElY nEeD pEoPlE!!” Ads…

will I get fired for this?

My mother and I share a car, I work the third shift at AutoZone. My mother has taken the car to go to south Carolina with her boyfriend and I have no way to get a ride nor can I afford Uber fare for the week. I'm going to call in and inform them of the situation but I am extremely anxious about getting fired. Would they have a justifiable reason for termination even though this was not in my control?

Anyone notice a large up-tick in job postings?

There is a car dealership near me that has 5 locations. They posted jobs for a service manager for each location, a parts manager for each location and technicians for each location. I've noticed this for similar companies as well. Multiple jobs that never seem to get filled, just to be posted over and over. I had a message from a recruiter asking for a time to have them call me to discuss the position i applied for. I replied and heard nothing back after a week, so I messaged them again. Still nothing. I've heard businesses say “nobody wants to work” so many times it's almost infuriating. I'm wondering if there is a relation between the two. I've heard businesses were/are getting money for having openings that they can't fill because “nobody wants to work”, so they're now posting non-existent jobs to get money rather than hire people.

Was ordered to resign by my manager.

I'm currently working at a contracting company, whose name will not be disclosed, who loans out developers and other technical sorts to various other companies. Having been misplaced into a position that I was not trained for, and given an unreasonably offset shift schedule with which I have no time to eat or purchase groceries, I approached my direct manager to ask to be released from the project in order to seek another one instead. This manager's response was to tell me to send a letter indicating my resignation from the company to him and one other person who manages this specific project. I know that Texas is not a particularly healthy state in regards to workers' rights, but surely this can't be legal? Obviously, I'm not stupid enough to give them a resignation in writing just because they asked me to, but surely this manager doesn't have the authority…
