My boyfriend was required and expected to work a 21 hour shift, sleep for 3 hours, and get back to work at 6:00 a.m. for another 10 hour shift.

And he said NO and I couldn't be more proud. First off… he drives a company vehicle. Hello that kind of work schedule reeks of liability issues (oh, it was a 30 minute drive back and forth, so x4 that's two hours of driving on the above 3 hour sleep schedule. Second… that is a staffing issue; if a company is requiring its workers to do overtime/on-call, FINE, but you need to let them REST before requiring a normal 10 hour work day, especially when the job itself requires power tools, machinery, etc. Hire more workers to allow the others to recuperate! And the worst part? My boyfriend went back to school during COVID, specifically for a new career, has been working for a few months… and is paid less than the new hires who have zero work or school/training experience. So yes, I'm proud he rejected this bullshit, understaffed,…

UPDATE Management has issued an ultimatum: return to office or you’ll be fired. I’m calling their bluff.

Well that was fast! Thanks to all who had such positive feedback on my original post. I appreciated all the kind and supportive responses! As a quick TL;DR my company sent some conflicting communications around return to office, eventually landing on guidance that “all employees must return to office in the next 2 weeks, or they would be terminated”. I decided to call their bluff by telling my boss directly that I would not be returning to the office. Many replies on my first post seemed very worried that I didn't have any backup plan, that I was relying on my coworkers quitting in solidarity, on me getting severance, etc etc etc. Despite the fact that I did have a backup plan, did not rely on my coworkers quitting in solidarity, or on getting severance. Well thankfully, none of those issues are of any concern now as I'll explain below.…

Is fining your employees for reasonable mistakes legal?

My boyfriend has just gotten a job as a shift lead at a pastry store that has just opened up in our town. We live in Pennsylvania. He and the other crew were just informed today that’s they can get fined for hundreds or thousands of dollars for simple mistakes. You can get fined for touching your face for hundreds of dollars. You can get fined for hundreds of dollars for having a dirty uniform. You can get fined a THOUSAND DOLLARS for making a tray of pastries and leaving it out. This just blows my mind?!? He doesn’t know if it would come out of pay or if it was a separate transaction, but one of the managers just told everyone this in the group chat. How is this allowed?! I understand maybe covering costs for BIG BIG mistakes, but I don’t feel right about this situation at all.…

“Exceeds Expectations” option removed from annual self-assessment

I’ve been with the same firm for 3 years, and as well all know, this comes with the dreaded annual performance review. In the past, we’ve been able to give ourselves up to five “stars” based on how well we think we meet or exceed expectations (or fall short). Not this year. We went straight from 5 options to 2. You either need improvement, or meet expectations. It’s really rubbing me the wrong way. It’s a blatant tactic to not have anyone “deserve” a raise on paper. So frustrating. How do your performance reviews work?

Boss made me work with a UTI

This happened years back when I was young, naive and spineless. I worked at a small convenience store on evenings when I was in university. One day I was closing by myself and a few hours into my shift, I went to the washroom and experienced a pain unlike anything I had ever felt (spoiler, it was my first UTI and the worst one I've ever gotten). Fairly convinced I was dying, I called the owners (husband and wife). The husband picked up and I was already crying. I tried explaining my situation but he got weird real and passed the phone to his wife. I explained in was in intense pain and asked if I could leave to go to the hospital (asking instead of telling was my first mistake). She went quiet today and I heard muffled sounds. The husband came back on the phone. “Hi. Yeah. So…
