Showed my 9 year old son the movie Newsies (the old Disney one from 1992) tonight. At the beginning, he was all “This is the most boring thing” but at the end, he was cheering with the Newsies, play “punching” the screen when the owner/police were in frame, and shouting “Strike!” along with them all! I explained a bit about child labor and how people suffered and what unions got the American worker–but he really just wanted to watch the movie. It was a great introduction to this topic though, and I expect to be referencing it often in the future. Finally part of the bigger picture.
I'm honestly over it. I'm over this entire American work system and I swear no one else I know seems to notice how we're all rats in a rat race to nowhere. Every time he tells us I just think about 1) how easily replaceable his position is and if he died the company would be like “so who's gonna do his job” 2) how he practically abandoned his family for 15 years because he chose his job over his family (likely why he got divorced and then remarried in his 40s) and 3) how much life he missed living because he claims he never took one vacation in those 15 years.
